Edith was born in Jul/Aug/Sep 1878 in Exeter, Devon, to William Edworthy (about 26), a railway guard and horse keeper/groom/carman, and Bessie Staddon Edworthy (nee Nott) (about 19), a housewife.
Edith was the eldest of six children (four girls and two boys):
- Edith Florence Jessie 1878 - 1895 (16)
- William Gilbert John 1880 - 1949 (69)
- Beatrice May 1882 - 1969 (86 or 87)
- Cora Agnes 1886 - 1907 (21)
- Frederick 'Fred' Cecil 1888 - 1975 (87)
- Winifred Violet 1895 - 1982 (87)
The 1881 Census shows Edith, as a toddler, staying with her maternal grandmother Grace Nott and aunt Jessie Nott, a milliner, at Southcott, Morchard Bishop. Her parents and baby brother William meanwhile lived in Follett's Buildings in Exeter. I wonder if Edith's middle name of Jessie was for her maternal aunt.
1881 Census:
Unfortunately, I cannot find the Edworthy family on the 1891 Census, though the births of Edith's young siblings imply they continued to live in Exeter.
Sadly, Edith's life was cut short. In March 1895, she passed away, aged only sixteen, in Exeter. She was buried on 13th March 1895. Edith, as well as her father William and younger sister Cora, is buried at Exeter Higher Cemetery in Heavitree, Exeter. Being poor their graves appear alas unmarked.
Edith passed away six months before her youngest sibling, my Great Grandmother Winifred, was born.
